e3 Talks Carbon at the Toronto Zoo |

Yesterday, e3 Solutions once again participated in the Toronto Zoo ECOexecutives Environment 101 workshop. J.P. Brown, an analyst with e3, delivered a presentation on the meaning and implications of climate change, global warming, and the greenhouse effect, as well as how to build a carbon footprint. Other presenters included Jeannie White from Symcor, Jennifer Taves from Partners in Project Green, Kerry Freek from Water Canada, Andrew Pride from the Ontario Power Authority, and Nelson Switzer from asherleaf.
The day also included a tour of several wildlife habitats. Attendees also had the opportunity to pet a rhinoceros. Click Read More for pictures.

e3 Helps Launch Green Citizen Campaign |

This past week, e3 Solutions partnered with Seneca College in launching their Green Citizen Campaign. The campaign was organized by Bill Humber, Director of the Office of Eco Initiatives at Seneca. The event, held at Seneca's new LEED Gold certified building, featured a keynote speech by Andrew Bowerbank, former head of the World Green Building Council. He was thanked by J.P. Brown, a graduate of Seneca's Green Business Management program, currently working as an analyst at e3 Solutions.
The day also included a screening of Mark Terry's The Polar Explorer, a documentary on the state of the polar ice caps, and an address by Dr. Gail Krantzberg of McMaster University on the effect of invasive species in waterways. Mike Nickerson, author of Life, Money and Illusion, gave the final talk. Representatives from Walmart Canada and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation were also present to promote their environmental initiatives.
All student attendees received a Green Citizen Card in recognition of their pledge to support environmental awareness in their lives and future careers. Said Seneca College President David Agnew, "Students will leave this conference with the commitment and tools to help build a sustainable world.”

Starting Monday, October 3rd, e3 will operate out of our new office at 50 Richmond St. E. in downtown Toronto. Just steps from Queen Subway Station and only 15 minutes from Union Station, our office will now be more accessible to both employees and clients.

e3 at Pearson Eco-Zone Tour |

Last Friday, J.P. Brown and Neo Yin from e3 Solutions attended a multi-facility tour sponsored by Partners in Project Green, of which e3 is a member. Representatives from many different industry sectors were present. The tour consisted of four facilities within the Pearson Airport Eco-Zone, the largest eco-friendly business district of its kind in North America. Included in the tour were
- The Fire and Emergency Services Training Institute (FESTI)
- The Supply Chain Management - Wal-Mart Canada Perishable Food Distribution Centre
- The Coca-Cola Bottling Plant
- The Hilton Garden Inn Toronto Airport
The FESTI facility, a LEED Silver certified building, featured passive solar design, radiant heating, a green roof, and energy efficiency to make it one of the most sustainable buildings at Toronto Pearson.
Next, the SCM Distribution Centre tour showcased a number of new initiatives being conducted at their Mississauga facility, as well as at their new centre in Balzac, Alberta. The highlight was a showcase of their new hydrogen-powered loading vehicles.
After lunch, a tour of the Coca-Cola Bottling plant demonstrated the company's move towards waste diversion equivalent to its packaging waste, as well as its sophisticated water filtration system.
Finally, the tour concluded at the Hilton Garden Inn, Canada’s first LEED certified hotel.

e3 at Enermodal 100 Celebration |

Last night, representatives from e3 Solutions attended Enermodal Engineering's celebration of their 100th LEED certified projects. With this achievement, Enermodal now holds one third of the Canadian share of LEED certified buildings. A partner of e3 since 2009, Enermodal Engineering provides engineering design services across Canada and is a leader in the energy and sustainable design field.
Last night's event, held at Corus Entertainment's new Corus Quay building at 25 Dockside Drive in Toronto, included a talk by Enermodal President Stephen Carpenter and a tour of the facilities. Some of the most noticeable features of this building were
- a five storey green wall to purify air
- wall paneling from recovered wood
- two rainwater cisterns
- occupancy and daylight sensors
The building also sits on a rehabilitated brownfield site.

e3 Attends Kortright Tour |

Last night, J.P. Brown from e3 attended a tour and networking event at the Kortright Centre for Conservation, in Vaughan, ON. This event was sponsored and co-hosted by Partners in Project Green, of which e3 is a member. Attendees were treated to a tour of the Archetype Sustainable House and the Earth Rangers Centre for Green Technology.
Knowledgeable staff explained some of the many innovations that make these buildings amoung the more energy efficient and sustainable in the world. In particular, the Earth Rangers portion of the tour focused on some of the changes that have occurred within the last year, as part of their application for LEED Platinum certification.
Some of the showcased innovations included
- a combined heat and power furnace that uses Sterling Engine to generate electricity and recovers the wasted heat to heat the home
- a compact, award-winning IT centre ranked among the greenest and most energy efficient in North America and the world
- a fireplace capable of heating the home for up to 12 hours from a single use
- the world's largest installation of earth tubes for air ventillation and cooling

Last Wednesday's ECOexecutives event at the Toronto Zoo was a great success. Larissa Teoh and Marie Hanchet from e3 Solutions we on hand to provide a Carbon 101 to companies seeking to implement green strategies.
Other industry leaders presented on subjects such as energy efficiency, green procurement, and waste management.
