FedEx to Offset Envelope Emissions

April 16, 2011 -

e3 client FedEx Express is launching a carbon-neutral shipping program for documents — at no extra charge to its customers.  The program extends to all FedEx Envelope shipping options, including FedEx First Overnight, FedEx Priority Overnight, and FedEx Standard Overnight.

FedEx Express will calculate on an annual basis the tons of carbon dioxide released through the shipping of envelopes. The company then will purchase the equivalent amount of carbon dioxide offsets from the not-for-profit BP Target Neutral, which invests in low carbon development or conservation projects. These projects include a biogas farm facility in the Netherlands, a reforestation project in the Tanzanian Southern Highlands that is converting degraded grassland to commercial forest, and a landfill gas collection system in Thailand.

In 2008, FedEx became the first company in the U.S. transportation industry to set a global aviation reduction CO2 goal and a commercial vehicle fuel efficiency fleet goal. By the end of FY2011, the company reduced aircraft carbon dioxide emissions by 13.8 percent compared to 2005 levels. FedEx Express has improved total fleet miles per gallon within the U.S. by more than 16 percent since 2005. In addition, FedEx has six solar installations with a capacity of more than 6 megawatts of renewable energy.

Waste Management in the News

October 12, 2011 -

Waste Management, an e3 client, was recently featured in an article on greenbiz.com.  Tim Cesarek, managing director of Waste Management's Organic Growth Group, discusses how Waste Management is putting in systems upstream to collect the waste before it recovers the materials and converting it into other products downstream.  In the downstream area, Waste Management has invested in and partnered with several companies to test and develop technologies to convert waste into commodities.

"If you think about it, the Waste Management of the past, it was a traditional truck that was designed to pick up trash and it wasn't thought of as a resource," Cesarek said. "But now as you begin to think about it being a resource and ultimately being a commodity, that means you've got to be the lowest-cost producer associated with the end commodity that's being made, from soup to nuts, meaning from production, from upstream across the supply chain, the midstream side of the business, to the downstream processing."

FedEx Releases Third Sustainability Report

FedEx, one of the world’s leading shipping companies and a long time client of e3 Solutions has released its third annual corporate sustainability report which highlights its sustainability achievements and future ambitions. Through the report, FedEx indicated that the corporation has invested in multiple renewable energy, waste reduction and recycling projects; as well as incorporating practices like FSC-certified paper use and ISO 14001 environmental management systems into its operating facilities.

Some of FedEx’s notable successes of the year include:

  • In October, FedEx opened the doors on a solar-powered hub in Germany, one of five FedEx facilities that together generated 11.2 gigawatt-hours of solar power in the past year.
  • This spring, FedEx was one of five companies to sign on to President Obama's National Clean Fleets Partnership, to develop cleaner, greener fleets.
  • And in January, FedEx landed two LEED Gold certifications, one for its global headquarters and one for its Las Vegas operations. At the same time FedEx announced that all of its new facilities going forward would be designed to achieve LEED certification.

FedEx’s corporate sustainability report is based on some of the key metrics laid out in the Global Reporting Initiative guidelines, which was calculated using e3’s Carbon Accounting Tools. The corporation has incorporated standards into the foundation of its practices and there are numerous cases of how the company is attaining a Win-Win situation through its sustainability strategy to strategic efforts. A telling example is FedEx's aircraft replacement project.

FedEx is replacing its 727s with 757s, which brings a 47 percent reduction in fuel consumption all by itself. The company is also the first to use 777s in their freighter configuration, which brings 18 percent more efficiency to the table. Not only does this initiative save FedEx a tremendous amount of expenditure on fuel expense, the planes can also fly a longer range without an intermediary stop, creating an extra 2-hour window in its Asia operations. FedEx has improved environmental efficiency and business performance. As Mitch Jackson, FedEx’s Vice President of Environmental Affairs and Sustainability best describes, “it’s the holy grail of sustainability."
